Bootstrap is a free and open-source CSS framework directed at responsive, mobile-first front-end web development. CSS or Cascading Style Sheets is a style sheet language used for describing the presentation of a document written in a markup language such as HTML. Cascading Style Sheets are used to format layouts for web pages. Bootstrap contains both CSS and optional JavaScript-based templates for typography, form, button, navigation, and other interface component designs.
Bootstrap was originally named “Twitter Blueprint” and was developed by Twitter developers Jacob Thornton and Mark Otto at Twitter HQ. Though, they did have help from a small group of other Twitter developers contributing to the project during Hack Week, a hackathon-style week created for Twitter development teams. It was then renamed Bootstrap and was released as an open source project. They created it to serve as a framework to encourage consistency across multiple internal tools because before bootstrap was developed, various types of libraries were used for interface development. This lead to many inconsistencies and a ton of burdens due to high maintenance. It is still maintained by Thornton, Otto, a group of core developers, and a community of people contributing.
Bootstrap is still popular due to it focusing on simplifying the development of informative web pages opposed to web apps. When bootstrap is applied to a web project, you get choices of color, size, font, and layout to add to the project. Once added to a project, bootstrap will then apply basic style definitions for all of the HTML elements. This means that the result will end up being a uniform style appearance available for prose, tables, and form elements that work across many web browsers. Anyone using Bootstrap can also learn and take advantage of the available CSS classes that are defined in Bootstrap to customize the appearance of their web projects even more. For instance, Bootstrap allows for light and dark colored tables, various page headings, prominent pull quotes, and text with highlights. They also provide additional interface elements for users. This includes, dialog boxes, tooltips, and carousels. And each component consists of an HTML structure, CSS declarations, and occasionally JavaScript as well as extending the functionality of existing user interface elements. And finally, the prominent components of Bootstrap is its layout components because they affect the entire web page as a whole. This affects the size and further customization.
